Your free range egg was produced on Kevin’s farm in the upper Eden Valley. New to the poultry industry they are enjoying the challenge of keeping laying hens with the whole family being enthusiastic and getting involved. The rolling hills of the Eden valley are the ideal location for hens to roam and explore. To encourage them to range further from their housing, trees have been planted to compliment the natural habitat of traditional stone walls, hedges and mature native trees.
The area has upland mixed broadleaf woodlands, so the new planting has taken this into account, with major and minor native trees and shrubs including Rowan, Birch, Sessile Oak and Hazel. For winter cover, Scot’s Pine and Norway Spruce were also included. Trees planted in clumps with a group of well matched species.
The results are encouraging and the farm is seeing an increase in the diverse range of birds and wildlife in the area.
