Gary and Hazel farm close to the village of Penruddock, the farm is nestled just far enough away from the busy A66 trunk road that it enjoys the peace and quite of rural Cumbria. Under the shadow of the start of the dominant Lake District mountains it is a wonderful location for keeping free range hens. It is a relatively new venture for them. Everyone gets involved, including, parents, children and grand parents making this truly a family affair.
They have a farm specific Bio-diversity Actin Plan that identified where new native trees and shrubs would enhance the environment for their hens (and the local wildlife too). A mix of trees have now been planted, providing cover and shelter for the hens to roam further. Species include Ash, Dowdy Birch and Rowan, with a small selection of Sessile Oak, Wych Elm, Bird Cherry and Alder. The hedgerow plants include a little Hawthorne and of course some Hazel! The area is rich in wildlife – with Red Squirrels, Bats, Barn Owls, Song Thrush and Grey partridge and all listed.
