Stir Up Sunday (late November) is the traditional day to mix up your Christmas pudding so it can mature before the big day. Everyone takes a turn stirring from East to West and making a wish — a sweet little ritual that warms the season. If you decide to make your own, here's an easy recipe to try

Ingredients

  • 200 g raisins
  • 200 g sultanas
  • 150 g currants
  • 100 g mixed peel
  • 150 g dark brown sugar
  • 150 g shredded suet or grated cold butter
  • 100 g breadcrumbs
  • 100 g plain flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp cloves
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2 free range eggs
  • 150 ml brandy or rum / orange juice
  • Optional: nuts glace cherries, silver coin charm (not recommended for safety)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.
  • Add the eggs and brandy; mix well.
  • Let each family member take a turn stirring the mixture from East to West and make a wish.
  • Spoon into a greased pudding basin and cover with parchment + foil.
  • Steam for 6 hours.
  • Cool, replace the coverings, and store in a cool, dark place.
  • On Christmas Day, steam again for 2 hours before serving.

Notes

Serving Tips:
Top with brandy butter, custard, cream, or set a little warmed brandy alight for a festive flourish.
