With Avian Flu (Bird Flu) spreading across Europe, there is a major increased risk to the UK . It needs to be faced realistically and we feel the DEFRA response is sensible and balanced.  Here at The Lakes Free Range Egg Company we rolled out the information to our producers straight away and have been in touch with them all.

We are following government advice with a massive increase in biosecurity.  Fortunately, The Lakes is already at a high level of bio-security, but there are always more things you can do in the short term to improve that.

To provide the best welfare for our free range hens, we are making sure they’ve got plenty to do. Because they normally range outside, they  would get bored indoors, so we’re adding extra enrichment in the form of hay, straw, branches string and tinsel in plastic bottles.

Our farm staff and our producers will all be spending much more time in the hen sheds to help keep them stimulated but calm. Working with animals is a way of life for a lifetime, it’s just something you do. Farming is always a challenge and farmers solve problems and adapt.

The Chief Veterinary Officer has issued new protection measures. You can find out more by following this link  Government guidelines on Avian Flu
